A new nation-wide mapping project has been launched for hedgehogs. The project is essential for combating the current hedgehog decline in the UK by giving a robust estimate of the current abundance and distribution of hedgehogs. The map can be used to track further declines and to find out in which areas hedgehogs populations are falling the most. The results may give us an idea of areas to target for hedgehog conservation measures or can be compared with land use changes to ascertain drivers of the decline.
With a third of Britain's hedgehogs disappearing in the last decade, volunteers are wanted to record each and every sighting of the cute, snuffling creature on a nationwide chart. The Big Hedgehog Map shows, at the touch of a button, the location of hundreds of the nocturnal animals - dead or alive. (SEE MAP) bighedgehogmap.org
